But in reality, doesn't any employer have a policy on what's considered excessive absenteeism? I've never worked for an employer who didn't have a written policy on it.....

then again..if we're sick and encouraged to stay home as workers (of any company) what do you do when you're kid is sick and you have to go get medicine or stuff to make them feel better? you take them to the store with you...so if we're posing a risk (so they say) to people by coming to work sick then aren't our customers jeopardizing our health as well as that of fellow shoppers so should we put a sign on the door saying stay the hell home if you're sick? come on it's unrealistic.....

Everywhere I have ever worked had an attendance policy too.  I find Walmarts to be very generous as far as working in retail goes.  But having it told like that makes it sound bad.  No matter where you go you are going to come across people that are sick and don't have the common sense to stay at home till they feel better.  At my old store this summer one of the ladies I used to work with died while at work.  She had excessive call offs (she had a mild heart attack about 2 years ago).  She tried to call off one day and the manager told her she would be terminated if she did not come in.  She went to work so she would not be fired and she had a heart attack at the fitting room and died.  I have not heard anything about the family taking leagal action.

My biggest complaint is with the "no doctor's note" thing.  In the old days, you didn't need one, all you had to do is tell them your Dr wrote you out..  Now, even if you have one, you get a black mark on your record.  With tardiness, they tend to apply it to the people they don't like/want to get rid of.  Our UPC clerk was about 10 minutes late almost every day.  Of course, that was under the limit, but almost EVERY DAY?!
The way it is now, folks who have kids or older relatives to care for, are under much more pressure.  I know sometimes the folks without kids or other dependents think they should get points for always being at work.  Let them take care of the kids or the family member one day, and they'll realize how hard it is to do that, and keep your job at Wm*.

Getting sick is part of life. Life is trying not to get sick.  LOL I find I get sick on my days off except I got H1N1 and needed 7 days straight. feel better now but LOL they wanted the DR note right away but not to come to work with it. I came to work with it and handed it in, I did wear a mask but.... I just could not figure another way to get them the note without going in person.

we have vendors coming through the back door with Swine Flu, wht are you going to do?  We have had customers bringing their children in with Swine Flu for two months now.  We have associates coming to work with it, I intend on sharing it with them if I get it.  Why even bother staying home with it?

I f you really have the flu you will run a temp of about 103 for at least 48 hours.I don't think any one can work with a temp that high.A lot of people think they have the flu when in fact they don't.

Chances are the folks who are making the biggest stink about Wal*Mart wanting them to come to work with it are the ones who have an attendance problem anyway and aren't believed when they try calling off sick with it.

Learning they have said that is you have flu symptoms most likely you have the h1n1. Not everyone will have the 103 temp. If you go on cdc.gov which is the governtments website to their h1n1 section it says it right there not everyone will have a fever with this flu. Anyone who has runny nose, sore throat, chills, and a feeling of lethargy or no energy for a long period of time probably had h1n1. Some people are having it turn into bronchiits. I myself went through a bad ear infection that was much more then the usual ear infection. There is alot of h1n1 out there some have high fever some don't. Check out flustar.com they track the flu national average temp is 100.7. So you don't have to have 103 temp.

Walmarts policy is fair on attendance and on sick days and I fully understand why the first day is treated the way it is there are far to many who would use a sick day anytime they didn't feel like coming in. You can see that with the way the intermittant leave of abscence things are abused. And they are abused way to much. You tell me it is always on weekends or next to their days off when people with those leave things get sick and need to use the leave thing. Way to many patterns with how they use them if you keep track of how people use them.

RE:Abc News: Walmart spreads swine flu

this is from the government site:

How do I know if I have the flu?

You may have the flu if you have some or all of these symptoms:

  • fever *
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • runny or stuffy nose
  • body aches
  • headache
  • chills
  • fatigue
  • sometimes diarrhea and vomiting

*It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/sick.htm  there ya go the cdc site for h1n1 tells alot if you are caring for someone that is sick or if you are sick. Also warning signs when you need to get to the emergency room.

What are the emergency warning signs?

In children

  • Fast breathing or trouble breathing
  • Bluish skin color
  • Not drinking enough fluids
  • Not waking up or not interacting
  • Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
  • Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
  • Fever with a rash

In adults

  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
  • Sudden dizziness
  • Confusion
  • Severe or persistent vomiting

I never had an issue with WMs attendance policy, it worked fine for me.  After I developed type2 diabetes I did fill out the ADA accommodation papers, just in case I ever needed time off for my diabetes and got close to the cut off for getting in trouble.  I think they should just use common sense in the H1N1 scenario, but you know everyone will not get treated fairly no matter what they try.  Good luck to everyone here.  Keep that hand sanitizer close!  LOL!  Belle

If you get sick enough to stay out of work one day, you might as well stay out for 3 days (if you have the personal and sick time), because it will count the same as one day of absence.  I've heard a few folks say that.  Since a Dr's note doesn't count for anything; why not!  If I wasn't a dept mgr, I might think about doing that some times.

The long, inevitable Swine Flu cave begins…

November 11th, 2009 <!-- by Jonathan Rees -->

Breaking…

Via e-mail from the National Labor Committee:

It is not enough, but it is a first step.

Last Friday, November 6, on Good Morning America, a Wal-Mart spokeswoman said no Wal-Mart employee would be fired for having swine flu. Still under pressure, on Monday (November 9), a senior vice president told the Washington Post that workers needing to stay home due to the flu will not receive a demerit or be docked their wages. Workers can use the sick leave they have accrued to pay for their first day out.

It is no small thing that popular pressure can force the largest employer in the U.S. to change its punitive policies.

Now the National Labor Committee will just keep pounding them until they actually follow CDC recommendations. In the meantime, the chances of the first customer swine flu lawsuit just increases.

Are they amending the policy from now on or is this just for the swine flu outbreak??  I wonder if you will have to have a doctors statement proving you had swine flu??  In my area they are not even testing to see if it is swine flu or not they just say it is becuase it is too early in the season for the seasonal flu to be going around.

Here they are telling patients not to even come in to the doctor's office unless you have complications and they have a list to go by for that. It is pretty much standard treatment like the previous post.  I am not seeing much at my local WW, just two suspected cases from associates that are not complainers and that do not casually call in.
